For thirty-five years I have been both privileged and proud to have represented Scotland In the European Union.
During this time I have witnessed the Scottish people embrace a strong, intelligent and welcoming European identity alongside those of closer Scottish and British affiliations.
The twinning of Musselburgh with friends from Italy and France is just one example of this.
Because Scotland has always so willingly recognised and respected the merits of building, adapting and participating in a union with our European partners, the tragedy of this unwanted departure is all the more painful.
I warmly commend the Association for organising this event today and join with them in expressing a deep and profound regret at the prospect of leaving the European Union. But I also acknowledge and appreciate that this is, as well, a time to commemorate and appreciate the benefits of the friendships and opportunities membership has given us.
